Bronchitis
Bronchitis is a common lung condition in
which the lining of the bronchial tubes is inflamed. These tubes carry air in
and out of the lungs, and their irritation makes breathing difficult due to the
narrowing of the ventilation space. Cough usually occurs in bronchitis due to
the formation of thick mucus. Bronchitis can be acute or chronic.
Symptoms
of Bronchitis
The symptoms of bronchitis vary depending
on the stage of the condition. Although some symptoms are common in acute and
chronic bronchitis, some special symptoms may be noted in the chronic stage.
Common
symptoms of Bronchitis:
Chest tightness and shortness of breath
Mild fever and chills
Cough with mucus that is clear, greenish or pale yellow, and sometimes blood stained.
Chronic bronchitis is defined as a sputum
cough that lasts from three months of the year to at least two years. ...
Acute or short-term bronchitis is more common and is usually caused by a viral infection.
Acute
bronchitis:
Characteristic symptoms of cold
Mild fever
Pain in the body
Most symptoms usually get better within a
week, although the cough may last longer.
Chronic
bronchitis:
Repeated coughing
The cough may be mild or very bad
Lasts at least three months
Bronchitis
Causes
The common viruses that cause colds and
flu, like the influenza virus, are responsible for bronchitis. However, chronic
bronchitis can result in gastric reflux, the release of stimulants into the
lungs due to chemicals, low immunity or smoking at home or at work.
Bronchitis Diagnosis
Especially in the early stages, it can be
difficult to differentiate bronchitis from a common cold. Physicians commonly
use the following tests to diagnose the condition:
Spit examination for symptoms of
allergies or other diseases
Chest x-rays are used to diagnose
pneumonia or other problems that may be coughing, especially in smokers.
Pulmonary function tests are prescribed to check lung capacity and the symptoms of emphysema and asthma.
Bronchitis Treatment
Since most cases of acute bronchitis are
caused by a virus, antibiotics are not given. Often, the disease resolves on
its own within two days. However, doctors prescribe cough syrup to ensure good
sleep and medication to reduce irritation and reduce shortness of breath.
Medications are also given for asthma or other lung diseases. Breathing
exercises, oxygen therapy, quitting smoking, excessive fluid intake and vapor
inhalation are other essential measures that help to alleviate the symptoms.
